The 17th annual Latin GRAMMY awards ceremony took place on Thursday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and broadcast on Univision. With 48 awards and 20 musical performances including by artists such as J Balvin and Pharrell, Diego Torres and Rachel Platten, and Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, this was the most memorable night of the year in the Latin music world. Here are the best five moments of the night.
1. When Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony sang, cried, and kissed each other during their 'Person of the Year' performance.
After Marc Anthony sang a medley of his greatest hits, JLo ed her ex-husband on stage to cover Pimpinela's 80s hit ‘Olvídame y pega la vuelta’. Lopez sang ionately with a much improved Spanish and then congratulated Marc on being named 'Person of the Year' by the Latin Recording Academy. "Marc is a living legend," she said in Spanish, visibly emotional. "He'll always be many things in my life. My mentor. A soulmate." Tears rolled down Marc's cheeks. And then, by popular demand of the audience who was shouting 'Beso! Beso!", the pair kissed each other on the lips.
2. When Carla Morrison called president-elect Trump an “orange asshole”.
When Mexican indie chanteuse Carla Morrison won Best Alternative Song for ‘Vez Primera’ during the pre-show awards (not broadcast on TV but livestreamed online), she took her time onstage to talk about Trump’s wall. “May the walls be mental, may we be able to destroy them and may they never tear us apart,” she said in Spanish. “Let’s not allow any orange asshole take away our spiritual and mental freedom." Like a boss.
3. When Farruko and Ky-Mani Marley did the mannequin challenge.
Puerto Rican reggaeton star Farruko and Ky-Mani Marley (yes, son of Bob) jumped on the internet's latest craze during their performance at the Latin GRAMMY. While the pair sang 'Chillax', the dancers did the mannequin challenge at the beginning, and then the singers and dancers froze again at the end of their performance.
4. When the Fabulosos Cadillacs gave the Latin GRAMMY the most rock en español moment of the night.
And Falvio Cianciarulo destroyed his bass. They might be old but they're still rock n' roll.
5. When Joy, from Jesse & Joy, dedicated her award to her dad.
"This is in memory of our daddy, may he rest in peace," she said in tears while she held her award for Best Contemporary Pop Album for Un besito más. "To our mom, who is at home, for all Mexicans in our country and for all minorities."
